JC Chasez judges from experience on MTV’s ‘Dance Crew’
JC Chasez won’t shut down someone else’s dream.
The former member of the boy band ’N Sync serves as a judge on MTV’s “Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew” (tonight at 9), which recently returned for a fourth season.
“Everybody always kinds of asks, ‘Is it tough to tell these kids anything negative?’ ” Chasez said in a recent interview at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. “And I don’t ever look at what I’m saying as negative. I always look at it as constructive.”
His years working as a performer influence his comments.
Follow up:
“We worked with choreographers, and they watched us while we were doing our performances and basically told us what needed to be done better until we got it right so we could bring it to an audience. So when I’m judging, I put myself in the shoes of how would I make this better. It’s been interesting to watch it from an audience perspective and really just voice my opinion.”
The entertainment industry has changed quite a bit since ’N Sync first came together in the 1990s.
“It’s night and day,” Chasez said. “One of the biggest changes is the whole business structure. Before, the artists had control of how they were publicly perceived. Now we’re in the information age. There’s really no information that’s protected. There’s no privacy. You can’t really perform for a specific audience because all eyes are on you. I don’t think it’s harder at all. I just think it’s different.”
Technology also allows almost anyone to create music and get it out to the public.
“Today you can make your music in your bedroom instead of having to go into a big studio and work with 50 players and a producer. Nowadays, there are kids that can make quality records by themselves and put it up on YouTube and get an immediate reaction instead of working on an album for two years.”
The 33-year-old is excited about the diverse range of dancers on the show this season but isn’t rooting for one particular group.
“I don’t ever try to play favorites,” he said. “I try to be as objective as possible. I figure if they made it this far, then everybody deserves a fair shake.”
When he’s not judging, Chasez continues to write and produce songs. He’s currently working on songs for the latest group of “American Idol” contestants. He doesn’t see a time when ’N Sync would reunite as the New Kids on the Block did.
“We had our time and we enjoyed it and we’re thankful for it, but there’s no sense in that,” he said.[source]
