21 and a Wake Up Fan Review

21 and a Wake Up Fan Review

First I want to say thanks to Rie for allowing us to share her review/description of JC's story line in the film and second a quick warning the review contains lots of spoilers. So don't read further if you do not want to be spoiled.

Once it was 8 o'clock, Chris McIntyre came to the front and thanked everyone for coming, pointed out a few guests that were Vietnam vets and a woman who'd been a nurse in Vietnam. Then he explained that they were still messing around with the song for the opening credits and we were the first people to watch the credits with "Hallejuah" playing. Then he asked everyone to fill out a survey card and to hand it in after the movie. He also explained that after Labor Day they'd release the movie to 10-12 other theatres in the Chicago area. That was my understanding. I also think they are looking to release elsewhere the further it gets into the Fall season, from what I gathered from the survey. Chris also said overall he'd gotten a good response for the movie so far and he also welcomed people to just walk up to him afterward out in the lobby for questions/comments after the screening.

Now to the movie.......The opening credits go by and you get introduced to Caitlyn Murphy (Amy Acker's character). She's like the head doctor/big shot all the other people, girls especially look up to. Tom Drury (JC's character) is basically like her male counterpart. They are best friends and they did 2 out of 3 of their tours of duty in Vietnam together. So after like two short scenes, Caitlyn and Tom are in an exam room and this is the scene where JC adjusts the tie. Caitlyn and Tom joke around with each other and then a Vietnamese woman named SungLee comes into the scene and Tom makes her address him with his full military title. He also tells her something like "Not now, SungLee".

Follow up:

The scene then goes right into Caitlyn and Tom jumping into the jeep and Caitlyn joking to him about SungLee and Tom goes, "She's the best piece of ass in all of Indo-China." So therefore it's confirmed to you that he and SungLee have slept together/are lovers. Caitlyn and Tom then have a meeting with higher up authority and you can tell that they respect and think Caitlyn and Tom are like two of their brightest doctors. JC looks really good in this scene and the camera gets kinda close to his face when he speaks. You feel like it's almost like an up close interview or something lol.

So after their meeting with superiors, the scene then moves onto Tom and Caitlyn back at the hospital and Tom is calling out orders to help a patient. He's in charge basically. Nurses and other doctors ask Dr. Drury what to do and follow his orders. lol. Then Tom jumps from the patient he was working on to another patient rolled in who has a grenade in his stomach. Caitlyn, Skylar (Kristyn's character), Jenny (Danica's character), and Tom moved outside and this is the scene you see JC's hands all bloody, standing outside of the hospital.

Tom says the guy with the grenade in his stomach is gonna die if they don't remove it and Caitlyn thinks he might die either way. She tells Tom that he doesn't have to take the grenade out. She insists that they can get it out together without it blowing up. Yet the grenade is live and one wrong move and it'll go off in the guy's stomach. Tom insists that he's going to remove it all on his own, play the martyr essentially, and he gets all serious with her. This scene was dramatic, serious JC. It was really hard when he handed Caityn over is dog tags and told her, "Murphy, listen to me. Now if anything happens to me, take these, and also go to my room and you'll find a locked box. I trust you with all my stuff." Caitlyn shakes her head with a slight laugh and goes, "Oh Tom, you'll be fine." Well Tom proceeds to move the patient behind this medical shield/barricade and he continues to talk to Caitlyn who's in front of the barricade. He's like "Murphy...remember when we saved that guy...."(forgot all the actual full lines, lmao) She yells back and goes "Yeah...blah blah" and they end up laughing together. Their one last reminiscent moment together ends in the grenade going off and Caitlyn is walking and looks back to see the explosion. Then the "human flesh" flies forward and you know Tom and the guy died.

I was shocked at this moment to say the least. LOL. I was almost not even sure if I'd enjoy the rest of the movie with JC's character dying like after only around 10 minutes of screen time. Yet...I actually still liked it and got sucked into it. Also for those thinking JC got shafted, there were a lot of characters that did die, some characters had even less screen time, and JC's character actually still had a little focus after his death. It was very much an ensemble cast. JC actually made out well for the part he got.

As for what happened with the Drury line after his death...Caitlyn has a scene where she cries about Tom's death. There's a few other doctor's who talk about how good of a man Tom was and how we was always reliable. Then Caitlyn also goes into his room and unlocks the stuff he told her to find and finds a letter. Also SungLee is in Tom's room crying. Caitlyn reads the letter with SungLee next to her and it read something like this. "Caitlyn, if you're reading this then you either broke into my stuff or something really did happen to me. I leave you all my cognac to drink and my collection of Playboy. I also want you to know the most precious thing in my life is in Cambodia. SungLee will tell you everything, Tom." So then you pretty much assume that Tom is talking about a child.

So a day or two later Caitlyn gets a 48 hour pass to leave the hospital and she travels to Cambodia pretending to be the press. With some other characters help she finds the house where Tom wanted her to go. There's a French nun there that greets her and asks "Is Dr. Drury going to be coming?" Sadly Caitlyn has to tell her no. The nun then introduces Caitlyn to a little girl named Kim. Caitlyn shows Kim a picture of SungLee and a picture of Tom and asks who who they are. Kim replies "Mommy and daddy." Caitlyn then tells Kim, "These are from your dad", as she hands the little girl Tom's dog tags. Then eventually Caitlyn gets Kim back to the hospital in Vietnam, reunited with SungLee.

So yes....JC's character had the Vietnamese lovechild!

Of course there were other stories/events going on, but that's mainly what went on with JC's character.
