« *NSYNC'er visits RichmondFrom boy band to solo artist: an interview with JC Chasez »

WKRZ in Pittston, PA

WKRZ in Pittston, PA

Thanx Lesley!

Thanx voxchasez!

Fishboy: JC Chasez in the building. Make some noise.

[Audience cheers]

Fishboy: And I got a studio full of people, too. JC, I’ll tell you what, we had to bat people away.

JC: Yeah we know, we learned how to make noise like, on cue. That’s exciting.

Fishboy: What’d you do?

JC: I’m just kidding. [Laughs]

Follow up:

Fishboy: You learned how to make noise.

JC: On cue!

Fishboy: Yeah, there’s an applause sign. Didn’t you see the applause sign? I turned that on real quick.

JC: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it worked, you know, I feel like I’m in the whole…like this is the old-school studios.

Fishboy: The old-school studios, yeah.

JC: Yeah, but you have all kinds of new buttons, so.

Fishboy: I do!

JC: You’re way past that.

Fishboy: In a little while I’m gonna let you come over here and just start pushin’ them all. I know that’s what you wanna do. That’s your thing, so.

JC: I wanna do it.

Fishboy: JC Chasez. Okay, now, if you’re not familiar with him - which, you’ve been living in a cave the last twenty years - he used to, uh, he used to be a part of NSYNC. He…a little band called NSYNC. And now you’re doing your solo thing, man.

JC: I am, I’m here literally hand-delivering you guys the first single of a new record that I’ve put together over the past year. The first single’s called Until Yesterday and it is co-written and co-produced by my buddy Justin Timberlake, who is just all over the radio right now himself, and on tour so, if you wanna see a great show I would say go see him. Um, but yeah, the song, it’s great, it’s a good time, and literally that’s the purpose for me being here, is to get back to radio and to get back to my fans, so that’s my purpose for being here tonight.

Fishboy: That is outstanding. Now, if you look around you, we do have our grand prize winners in the studio. Go ahead girls, say hello. Say hi to all your moms and dads out there.

[Silence]

Fishboy: No? Okay.

[Laughter]

JC: They get nervous! [to audience] It’s weird, right? Put ‘em on the spot! They’re like, “ngghh!”

Fishboy: No, watch, I can say go ahead make some noise: “Go ahead, make some noise!” and they will, right? No? Okay. Wow. You guys are absolutely…

JC: They shut you down!

Fishboy: …killin’ me tonight! Wow!

JC: You can hear them giggling a little bit, like…

Fishboy: Yeah.

JC: You know, I went in there to talk to ‘em earlier and it’s just like, “Any questions?” And first it’s just like [makes cricket noises].

Fishboy: Cricket, cricket, cricket.

JC: But then, you know, you just gotta give them a little time. We’ll give them like a few passes to interview. Warm them into it.

Fishboy: I think we need to send someone down below, get some Red Bull.

JC: There you go.

Fishboy: Get them all, like, energized, you know what I mean?

JC: There you go. That’s another thing I should’ve invented. Thanks for reminding me.

Fishboy: Oh yes. Besides coffee, you should’ve invented…

JC: Yeah, yeah.

Fishboy: Exactly. All right, more with my boy JC Chasez, he’s in the house. Plus more on today’s best music, next. It’s KRZ, hanging out.

Part 2

Fishboy: Hola, hola. Hello, JC.

JC: [Laughs] How are you.

Fishboy: And uh, of course, Some Guy Named Tias, too. He decided to wake up and come in and join us.

Tias: [Talks about being in the station’s conference room with other fans who did not get VIP passes to be in the studio audience]

Fishboy: Oh.

Tias: But it was a really cool thing. ‘Cause actually, um, with your management, we were just listening to some more tracks from your upcoming album. Dude, that is a hot, hot album, man! So we were listening to that song Kate.

JC: Mm hm.

Tias: Again. You know, which was good stuff. Now, I gotta ask, though, man. You know, ’cause…no, all right, no, people knew, obviously, you were coming over here.

JC: Right.

Tias: Right. There’s a lot of things in the celebrity world, you know, because you’re a part of that scene.

JC: Yeah.

Tias: Is there really any girl in particular [that] some of these songs may be about? I mean, I read the gossip sites and stuff, they have their own opinions.

JC: No. I mean, I can say that…no. Um, I’m not…you know what, it’s um…this person that I’ve developed is literally, um, you know, it’s pieces of past experiences, uh, but it’s also pieces of my imagination. It’s not really, it’s really not about anybody in particular.

Tias: Remember, his first solo album was also called Schizophrenia?

[Laughs]

JC: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Tias: Which, I loved the cover of that album, by the way. You in a straitjacket and all that stuff.

JC: I shot that, that whole photoshoot was in the desert, man, and it was a hot day that day. But this new, uh, again, this new album is great as well. Actually, this one - it was like 110 when we were shooting this one as well. So I’m just not lucky with that.

Tias: Is there a theme, or what?

JC: Uh, [in an over-the-top voice] the record’s hot, man! The record’s hot!

Tias: [Laughs]

JC: It’s hot!

Tias: So, you know, you come over here to northeast Pennsylvania…

JC: Mm hm.

Tias: …which we love when you guys come in.

JC: Mm hm.

Tias: So what’s - being you’re on the road, kind of doing this tour for your record - what’s it like compared to your normal lifestyle? Like, first off actually, where do you normally live?

JC: I live in Florida. I live in Orlando, Florida. Uh, it’s been my home for many years now.

Tias: Big fan of Disney…

JC: I’m a huge fan of Disney, I used to work for the Mouse. Uh, I made a good living doing that. Um, you know, traveling’s fun. Some people don’t like it at all and some people love it, and I’m one of those people that loves it. I really do like going to different places and seeing different things. And um, what’s been fun for me, again, is for this record, I haven’t done it in a while, is literally hand-deliver this record, you know, to my audience. And I said uh, you know, I wanna be on the radio again, man. I mean, radio is music, you know. There’s all these other formats and forms that are going on, you know, with the internet and TV and things like that, but you know, music is about the radio. And that’s why, you know, I even have a song on my album called On the Radio.

Tias: Dedicated to Fishboy.

JC: Yeah, there you go.

Fishboy: Thank you. Thank you, by the way.

JC: Actually, that song’s like a whole ‘nother ball of wax. But yeah, you know, that’s why I’m out here. And I wanted to, you know, I wanted to see my audience, you know, and things like that, and to get back in touch with everybody, and that’s why it was nice to see everybody come out tonight. And, you know, it’s important to me. I haven’t been able to have that kind of contact in a while. And you know, you can’t forget that that’s why you do this.

Tias: Well that - you know, that’s, see, that’s really cool. A lot of people just put out albums and they don’t really visit the radio stations…

JC: They’ll go to like the five majors and then, you know. But it’s important to go out and say hi to everybody.

Tias: Aw, that’s right. All right, so, um…oh, I gotta get close to the microphone. I’m so sorry. All right. [Jokingly] I didn’t want to get too close to JC!

[Laughter]

Tias: You know, when you talk about, you know, like you come and see the fans, you know, where some other celebrities - we’ll just leave the, nameless - you know, who go and do all the parties and stuff, and they just kind of, you know, they walk out of cars and they…it must be really hot in certain places so they don’t wear underwear. [referring to Britney Spears]

JC: Oh, wow.

Tias: I don’t know if you know any people like that at all.

Fishboy: [Laughs]

JC: I know no one! I know no one.

Tias: It’s all Photoshop, I imagine. Right?

JC: Yeah, well, you know what, if you guys - I mean, everybody cares about this situation, you know, I have my point of view on it, everybody’s got their own opinion. Um, I will say this: the girl is genuinely a sweet girl. She got caught in a bad moment, absolutely. But her heart is good. Um, she’s going through a tremendous, you know, period in her life…

Tias: No kidding, yeah.

JC: …where she’s having to deal with one of the hardest things that anybody’s ever gonna have to deal with, and that’s a divorce, with two kids. You know, when anybody talks about the word divorce, it’s never going to be easy. Now put two children in the mix. Now put the fact that she’s, what, 24, 25? And she hasn’t been able to really, really leave her house in the last two years? And have any fun whatsoever because she’s scrutinized for every step that she takes. And you know what, if that’s the worst thing that ever happens to her, that somebody takes a picture of her because she got caught not wearing underwear instead of doing something outrageous, like, on purpose?

Tias: Mm hm.

JC: I think that she’s going to be in pretty good shape. I think that you can definitely bounce back from something like that. People learn from their mistakes and uh, you know, people have made a lot worse mistakes. And the fact that, you know, she’s out there, um, there’s no doubt in my mind she loves her kids, but again, dealing with a situation like this is never easy. When the person that, you know, you were married to, the entire world calls a bum, that means they’re passing judgment on your choice to choose him. And that’s hard. And you know, at the end of the day, she did realize she made a mistake. But, you know, only those two know what happened behind closed doors and how he really treated her. Everybody on the outside can say “Well, he’s a dancer,” you know, well, Britney’s a singer and a dancer and she just happened to grab the world’s attention. Um, but deep down the girl is a beautiful person inside. And uh, she’s always been wonderful to me. Um, I’ve known her since she was 12 years old, you know, and I think she can bounce back from this. She’s a great person and I think that everybody makes mistakes along the way, but everybody’s quick to judge and say mean things. But again she’s dealing with something that’s overwhelming.

Tias: Well how does, um, where I’m going with the whole thing - which, thanks for the inside scoop on that one - ’cause I mean, you’re right. A lot of people just don’t know.

JC: It’s just my opinion, by the way. That’s not fact or whatever.

Tias: Oh no, I got it.

JC: But I mean, the facts are she’s in the middle of a divorce. The facts are she’s got two kids tied up in the middle of it. And, you know, and the facts are that she really hasn’t had a chance to be young for a while.

Tias: Now what, what about - you know, take that for yourself. I mean, how do you, uh, what do you do in like your free time? I mean, do you go out to the clubs, do you go crazy sometimes?

JC: I’m like anybody else. Yeah, I have my fun, you know. I’m not gonna even come close to denying that, you know. But I’m lucky that I have a good group of friends around me, you know, and I do. I, I trust the people that I have around me right now. And some people don’t even have that luxury because people are obviously gonna tell you what you want to hear when they need something from you. Uh, but I’ve been blessed, you know - and not to say that I haven’t had friends that I needed to watch out from, and I’ve lost a few friends along the way. But I’m lucky now, I’m in a place in my life where I do, I have a great group of friends around me that are very protective of me, actually.

Tias: Mm hm.

JC: And I’m thankful for those people every day, and uh, and so, you know, I’m like anybody else. I’m old enough to go out to a bar, I’ll have a drink.

Tias: [gasps]

JC: No, but if I wanna go to a movie, I go to a movie. If I wanna hang out with my friends, we can sit around and do nothing. I was telling him, you know, when I’m in - when I’m traveling around, I’ll find silly things to do, dude. I’m just as much into karaoke as anybody else. I mean, I have a bit of an unfair advantage….[laughs]

Fishboy: Yeah, gee, I’d say so!

[Laughter]

JC: But, you know what I mean?

Fishboy: I don’t know, though, I think my G’nR impersonation can kick your butt. I don’t know.

JC: Yeah, there you go. I mean, it’s just about having fun. It’s about living your life. And, you know, I’m not gonna quit living. I mean, I enjoy what I do. I love music, you know, and uh, that’s the reason I do it. Some people do it because they like the attention, and that’s fine for them, you know. Um, for me, I’m thankful that I have an audience that’s willing to listen to my music and…but that’s the things that I care about, is the product that I give them. I care about, you know, that more than anything else. I don’t really necessarily care that, you know, they like the jacket that I wore that day, or how cool I look or how hot or like, whatever. The thing is, I like the fact when somebody comes over and is like, “Dude, I love that song.” That’s the greatest thing that anybody can say to me.

Tias: That’s real cool, yeah. ‘Cause I know…it seems like there’s a developing trend of celebrities adopting children?

JC: I’m not ready for that phase of my life!

Tias: [Laughs]

Fishboy: No? No?

JC: I’m just gonna throw that out there. You know, I’m just not ready for that responsibility. I can say that - I’m totally comfortable with that!

Fishboy: Speaking of kids, I mean, I know you’re not that far off yet, not even worried about that.

JC: Yeah.

Fishboy: How about the woman life, the love life right now? Anything?

JC: Yeah, you know what, I’m very single right now. Um, I just, I’m not ready to deal with that either, actually.

Fishboy: Okay. All right.

JC: I mean, you know, I date and things like that, but uh, at this moment in my life, it’s just not where my focus is. And uh, you know, relationships take time and energy, and right now my heart and my mind are focused on my music and this record, really. Um, because, you know, I’m like anybody else. I’ve spent, you know, over a year working on this record, and uh, so I wanna put all my energy - as much energy as I put in just to make the music, you know, I’m gonna put at least that much into bringing it to the people. And it wouldn’t be fair for me to try and have a relationship in the middle of that.

Tias: Emotionally unavailable.

Fishboy: That’s right.

JC: Right. But we can have a good time, you know, hey!

[Laughter]

Fishboy: We do what we gots to do!

JC: There you go.

Tias: No commitment, that’s right. All right, man. Uh, well, again, more with JC Chasez in just a little while.

Part 3

Fishboy: JC Chasez in the house tonight.

JC: What’s up, buddy?

Fishboy: How you doin’?

JC: I’m good, man.

Fishboy: Let’s talk a little bit about your album.

JC: Okay.

Fishboy: All right, now, there is no name for it yet, right?

JC: Well, it’s tentatively being called Kate. Kate is an imaginary person that I’ve created and used as my muse, and ended up writing this group of songs about.

Fishboy: Okay. So Kate is the…

JC: Tentative title.

Fishboy: Tentative. Okay.

JC: I’ve had a couple of titles, but this is the one I’ve liked the best so far.

Fishboy: Kate. Okay. All right, cool. And um, in a little while we’re actually gonna get to hear your new single.

JC: Yes indeedy. Until Yesterday.

Fishboy: Love it.

Tias: I have another question.

Fishboy: Go ahead. Some Guy Named Tias, by the way.

Tias: I’m like, I’m goin’ back and forth from like, you know, my MySpace page. You know, some people who can’t be here, they’re actually asking questions.

JC: Uh huh.

Tias: And someone has a very big question about Lance.

JC: Okay.

Tias: Lance Bass. I mean, it’s the question a lot of people have been thinkin’ about, you know, they wanna know the answer to.

JC: Okay.

Tias: And you know, what was, you know, the mindset behind this whole thing? What was he thinking? How long did you know?

JC: Mm hm.

Tias: Um, so, did you ever know that he wanted to go into space?

[Fishboy and Tias laugh]

JC: [Amused] Um, yeah, actually, as long as I’ve known him the kid’s actually been fascinated with [?] and of course he never made it. That was a great question. Love that story.

Tias: I mean, really…

JC: But you know, but people don’t even realize what he went through, actually, to do that whole thing. Like he lived in Russia for almost a year and trained with those cosmonauts. And he did some of the most, by the way, the most insane things I’ve ever heard of. Like, you know, he’s getting up and riding around in like, Migs and stuff like that, these jet planes. They’re like, they’re trying to make his eyeballs rest in the back of his head by hitting Mach whatever. And I’m just like, “Dude.” He’s like, “Yeah, it was a crazy year,” you know, but he would come back and you know, for a while he was completely fluent in Russian which blew my mind, you know.

Tias: Okay, didn’t know that.

JC: But that’s because, you know, the kid wanted to go…I mean, he just had the desire. He wanted to go.

Tias: I think that’s actually kinda cool. I mean, if I had the money and the support system to actually do it, I would try to do it.

JC: Absolutely. But it is - but you gotta remember the risks that’re involved, too. Like, I mean there’s…I mean, it’s going into space. Something that we know so little about.

Tias: We’ve never been on the moon, man. Whatever, dude.

JC: [Laughs] It’s all a conspiracy!

Tias: He was just trying to prove that whole theory.

JC: Yeah, yeah.

Tias: How’s he doin’ with the…other situation, I’ll call it.

JC: Um, you know what, the kid is uh, he’s happy, man. And uh, you know, he’s living a life now that is, you know, obviously out in the open and uh, he’s much happier about it, you know. He doesn’t…again, before, it’s not like you have to divulge your personal life, but at one point people were attacking him for not saying it, you know. And uh, which I don’t necessarily think is right. There’s nothing wrong with having a private life.

Fishboy: Right.

JC: But it seemed like people weren’t willing to let him have one. So, you know what, he decided to make the choice to tell the world, and um, that, you know, that he’s gay, and um, you know, obviously he knows that when he makes a statement like that that there’s going to be a mixed reaction. Like he knows that automatically, no matter how nice of a guy he is…

Fishboy: Yeah.

JC: How, you know, how real the guy is, somebody’s gonna hate him for it.

Fishboy: Yeah.

JC: You know? And that’s a tough pill to swallow. But at the end of the day, he doesn’t wanna, you know, he doesn’t wanna lie about it, you know.

Tias: Right.

JC: And at the end of the day, he really didn’t feel like for a while that it was anybody’s business, but uh, but if you hound somebody long enough, you know, it’s like “Look. All right, if this is what you wanna know, this is the case. Fine. Can we all get over this now?” You know? And uh, so, the thing about it for him was, again, he had to deal with the fact that he knows automatically, whether the people know him or not, is how he’s going to be viewed now. Some are positive ways, but automatically just people that don’t even know him, they’re going to judge him now for that. And that’s a tough pill to swallow.

Tias: I really want him to go into space now. Not just to be the first boyband member to go into space, but to be the first gay to go into space.

[Laughter]

Tias: I mean, really, come on. There’s ground-breaking material all through here!

JC: Wow.

Tias: I’m all supporting for Lance, I really am!

Fishboy: Right, right.

JC: Wow.

Tias: Actually it must have been a cool thing. I know I’m going back to the astronaut thing again, but I imagine it’s just - I’m hangin’ around with a bunch of my friends. Hangin’ around the house, you know, playin’ Playstation or somethin’ like that. All of a sudden you sit down, like, “Yo, I wanna go into space!”

JC: Yeah.

Tias: I mean, did he like just break it that way?

JC: Well, I can be…I mean, what kid, when you’re a kid, doesn’t want to go into space, you know? Everybody wants to ride around in the Millenium Falcon.

[Fishboy and Tias laugh]

JC: I mean it’s like, c’mon! Who doesn’t want a Chewbacca? So uh, you know, I mean, it’s, it’s cool. The kid’s doin’ his thing. I mean, he has great, great dreams and aspirations. He’s literally a certified cosmonaut at this point. If it came down to it, he would just need mission training at this point.

Fishboy: Right.

JC: He has the knowledge to go into space at this point…

Tias: That’s awesome.

JC: …which is already awesome in itself, and been through the training and everything. And so he’s earned a lot of my respect just from his drive from that alone. Getting that far is, you know, is farther than a lot of people who’ve dreamt their whole lives to get there. So um, that’s, that’s, you know, says something about him as well.

Fishboy: All right, now one of our grand prize winners has a question. We’re gonna bring her over. I’m actually gonna see if I can pick you up a little towards the mike. Go ahead. What d’ya got?

Audience member: Are you still friends with Justin Timberlake?

JC: [Laughs] Yeah. That’s actually…the first song that’s coming off the album, the Until Yesterday song, again, like I said before, um, I co-wrote it with him. Um, and uh, he did the production on it. And um, you know, it was great to be back in the studio with him. Uh, we were talking one night and uh, he just kinda - we just kinda were talkin’ and shootin’ the breeze, and the next thing you know it was like, you know, “Why don’t we get in the studio together?” And I was like, “I don’t know, why not?” You know? And a week later we were in there, you know, and we were makin’ records again. And it was a lot of fun. But it was great because it was a whole ‘nother perspective.

Fishboy: Right.

JC: It wasn’t about…again, it wasn’t about compromises at this point. His job at that point was to be the producer and to get the best out of the artist. So it wasn’t like, you know, “I’m not feelin’ that from my point of view.” We didn’t have to - it was a relief for me because, you know, he was getting the best out of me instead of, you know, really saying “Well this has gotta be me and you.” You know what I mean?

Fishboy: Right.

JC: It was about, you know, my point of view, but it was about, uh, making it the best it could possibly be, and he’s a great producer. I feel like he got something out of me that nobody else could’ve gotten out, and uh, it was great. It was fun, man. It was like, it was all jokes. Um, and you know, again, it was also great to see the new point of view. After being on the road for ten years…

Fishboy: Right.

JC: …you know, you can finish each other’s sentences, you know what I mean? We would sit down and talk and you know what somebody’s going to say before they say it.

Fishboy: Yeah, there’s that level of comfortability because you’ve been together so long.

JC: Yeah. But at the same time you also kinda become, like, the same mind, so you don’t maybe get as inspired by it because you know it’s coming. when we’ve lived separate lives now for years, and it’s like, he’s experienced things different than I have and I’ve experienced things different than him, so when I bring a story to the table it’s brand new again.

Fishboy: Right. And speaking of that direction…

JC: Yes.

Fishboy: May I ask you this question?

JC: Yes.

Fishboy: Is there any future - down the line, I’m not sayin’ next year -

JC: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Fishboy: Is there a possibility…

JC: I already know what question’s coming.

Fishboy: Yeah. Is there a possibility of NSYNC gettin’ back together? Is there a possibility?

JC: Um, I mean at this point, it’s not even a thought.

Fishboy: Okay.

JC: You know, so uh, I mean, I really can’t say “yes” at this point because it’s not even a thought. Everybody is very happy with the way things are going and everybody’s happy living, you know, living their lives now and looking at these dreams that they’ve got in front of them. I mean, this is my dream, is to have a record out, you know? I’m passionate about music, I made this record, I put over a year of this, of…night and day, thinking about ideas and how to connect to people and what my heart feels like and what my mind finds interesting. I’ve put, you know, I’ve put my whole body and mind and soul into this, and so I feel strongly about it and of course, I wanna see this thing through. Um, so that’s where my mind is now. I can’t tell you what I’m gonna be doing in five years. I can tell you that, you know, music will always be a part of my life.

Fishboy: Right.

JC: In some way, shape or form because it is what I’m most passionate about. But what I’m doing in five years - I can tell you what I hope I’m doing in five years.

Fishboy: Which would be?

JC: Making music and then performing for audiences and things like that. But, you know, can I tell you that is what I’m gonna be doing? I have no clue.

Fishboy: Well, what are your roots? What was your inspiration to start?

JC: Um, you know, I got into music relatively late compared to what other people always say. They’re like, “Oh, well, I could sing when I came out from my mama, and I was holdin’ the soap bar and singin’ into it like a microphone!”

[Fishboy and Tias laugh]

JC: You know. I didn’t do that.

Fishboy: I still do that, by the way.

JC: Yeah, okay, cool. Um, but, you know when I was about 12 or 13 - um, was I 12, I guess? Um, I got…I was dancing in little teen clubs with my best friend. We would always like go there and do our little dance - make up dance routines and stuff while we were there, you know, and a friend of mine, her name’s actually, her name’s Kim Rowland. Ooh, I said her last name. Ooh.

Fishboy: Ooh.

JC: But not from Destiny’s Child Kim Rowland, by the way.

Tias: I was gonna say, yeah.

JC: No no no no. Uh, a girl that I grew up with asked me and my friend to be in a talent show with her. And she was like, you know, “You guys will be the only ones there, so I know the judges would, you know, help us out, and they would be like, ‘That’s so cool.’” And I was like, “I don’t know about all this, man.” But, you know, she’s kinda cute. [Laughing] So, and my friend Kacey actually liked her friend, so it’s like, “Bro, we’ll hang out with them everyday! We’ll make up dancer teams, this is the coolest thing I can think of!” So we ended up making up a routine, and we ended up taking first place.

Fishboy: Oh, all right, there you go!

JC: Yeah. So after that it just kinda - everything kinda started, uh, kinda snowballing from there. It was like, after we won that competition, we entered another one and we won that one. And then my friend dared me to sing on stage. Now I never sang in public before, except for like at school when you have to do chorus class, because, you know, you have to. And uh, you know, even in chorus class my teacher never thought twice about me. She was always, you know, I would always wanna try and get one of the solos and she was like, “Nahhh.”

Fishboy: Man, is she kickin’ herself right now!

Tias: [Laughs] Great teacher, great teacher. What’s her name? And last?

Fishboy: Yeah, go ahead!

JC: I don’t, actually don’t remember her name. But um…

Fishboy: Miss Wrong. [Laughs]

JC: Yeah. But uh, either way…

Fishboy: Dead wrong, yeah.

JC: You know, so, that snowballed until the singing in public, and then who knew - like the first time I ever sang in public, I won the whole competition. Like, best overall performance. It was like, I went up there in T-shirt and jeans and got dared to do it.

Tias: [Laughs]

JC: But uh, but I ended up getting it, and then my mom reads an article in the paper about, you know, a TV show, and the whole thing snowballed from there. And I think when I really fell in love with music is when I went down to do the Mickey Mouse Club. And I was like 12 or 13 years old and I was, you know, I was put in close proximity with 20 people that felt the same way I did about, you know, dancing, and then to be around these kids who’ve been singing since they were five, I was like “Dude, this is amazing.”

Tias: [Laughs]

JC: And it blew my mind, you know. I didn’t really listen to a lot of music before that. So then, now you throw me in a situation where I’m hanging out with kids all over the country. You know, this kid was from Texas, this kid’s from Michigan, this kid’s from, you know, San Jose, California, and they all came from different backgrounds and different styles of music. And that - you wanna talk about a school of music? That was it, man. ‘Cause everybody was passionate about what they liked. And so next thing you know, that’s all they put out in front of me, and that’s when I knew without a doubt, that’s what I wanted to do. Now, some kids, they wanted to be actors and - you know, Keri Russell and Ryan Gosling have obviously gone on and done the acting thing, and done it well.

Fishboy: Right.

JC: Congratulations to Ryan, by the way…

Fishboy: Yeah.

JC: …for his success and the big nomination. There you go, buddy.

Fishboy: He gonna win it, or what?

JC: Um, I don’t know, I gotta check on that. But um, he did get nominated, but I haven’t been able to pick up a paper in a while, I’ve been traveling everyday. But um, yeah, I mean, but I knew at that point that music was my passion, without a doubt.

Fishboy: You know, I think, you know - one thing, you know, ’cause I know you, we’re on kind of a tight schedule here…

JC: Yeah, yeah.

Fishboy: Um, but, you know, we gotta play your single on the air. ‘Cause I had a lot of people, it’s like, “Look, you know, you got him on the air, you gotta play his single, you know, Until Yesterday.”

JC: Yes.

Fishboy: Um, I tell you what. Can we play that real quick? ‘Cause I know, like, I’m getting text messages from my friends, you know, the girls are like “Hey, hold it, will you shut up, play his song!”

JC: Yeah, absolutely. This would be the brainchild of myself and uh, with a large helping hand from Mr. Justin Timberlake. This is the single, it’s called Until Yesterday.

Fishboy: There it is. Thank you, JC!
