Backstage interview with KDND Sacramento
Thanx Lesley!
Trish: So dude, tell us about “Until Yesterday.”
JC: Uh yeah, well, you just actually held the single in your hand. Uh, it’s exciting, man. It’s the first single off this upcoming album; I co-wrote it and co-produced it with Justin, uh, Timberlake, who…
Trish: Who’s that? [Laughs]
Follow up:
JC: He seems to be this guy who’s just super world-famous and uh, seems to be just, like, the most talented guy on earth. Um, but it was a lot of fun, man. We had a lot of fun in the studio making it. It’s a great, intelligent pop record. I wanna make…my album is about making songs that are very melodic and…but that feel great, so I wanted to make a record that everybody could have fun listening to. And it can be, uh, it has depth, you know. It’s not all on the surface. Not only does it feel great, it’s actually saying something.
Trish: What does “Until Yesterday” say?
JC: Oh this one, this one’s your Maury Povich drama right here.
Trish: [Laughs]
JC: It is, it is! You know when you watch Maury Povich and he’s just going, “You are not the father.” I mean, that’s what this record is, it’s that moment. The tagline is “I loved you all the way until yesterday” and it’s basically finding out that your girlfriend got knocked up by another guy.
Trish: Is this like real life…
JC: This is not real life, no. But what I wanted do is, ’cause I’ve heard a thousand breakup songs and I’ve heard people say, you know, “I’m so mad at you” in a hundred ways but, you know, but it usually boils down to – and I hear it in a pop record – it’s just kinda like, “I’m mad and I’m leaving,” you know? And I wanted to add a bit of that…I wanted to raise the stakes, man. Raise the stakes and create a bit of drama to make it more interesting and uh, so the record’s a lot of fun.
Trish: So you had a little bit of downtime since Schizophrenic. What you been up to?
JC: I did some touring after I released that record and then I took some time to myself to kinda look at everything, look at the bigger picture and get myself in order, and then I started putting this record together about a year and a half ago. And now I’m ready to release it to the world again. So, um, I just basically chilled out, hung out with my friends and family and hit the reset button and then charged up and got ready to do this one.
Trish: Tell us about your love life. Give us the dish on the ladies.
JC: I’m kinda, like, too busy actually, to be dating at the moment. I’m literally in a different city every day. So, um, I’ve been pretty low-key right now, more concentrating on my music and stuff like that. But, you know, maybe if I stay in the same city for three days I’ll meet somebody (instead of one), so…
Trish: [Laughs] Three days is a long-term relationship.
JC: Three days is long-term! We’re talkin’ about growin’ some roots.
Trish: JC, thanks so much. We’re lookin’ forward to having you as our special secret guest. We’re back in the secret lair at Jingle Ball 2006. Thanks again.
JC: Thank you very much.
