Matchbox Twenty's "Bent" has been knocked from the Number One position on the current Billboard Hot 100 singles by "It's Gonna Be Me," the latest hit from teen-pop sensation 'N Sync. That means "Bent," from the band's sophomore album, Mad Season, now claims the Number Two slot, just above one of the year's most enduring songs, Vertical Horizon's "Everything You Want."
Such company is likely fine with Matchbox Twenty lead singer Rob Thomas. He told LAUNCH recently that it takes all kinds in pop music these days. "If you turn on the radio, you know, apparently it ranges from Celine Dion to Korn, which leaves a lot of room to do, you know, whatever it is that you want to do. So, I think that everything is OK. When that Britney Spears song came out, that 'Oh baby, baby,' I couldn't turn it off. That's because who ever wrote it wrote a really good song, you know? They wrote a catchy song. It wasn't a heartfelt song, it wasn't a, you know, a songwriter's dream song -- it was just a good song to turn on while you're driving down the road. And people need to write those just as much as, you know, as they need to have your Joni Mitchells, you know?"
